THE JOHNNY MICHEAL SPANN DETACHMENT ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

In keeping with the Marine Corps tradition of taking care of its own, in 2011 the Marines of the Mike Spann Detachment, The Marine Corps League established the Johnny Micheal Spann Detachment, Marine Corps League Endowed Scholarship at The University of Alabama to provide financial assistance to deserving students who have a personal or family connection to the U.S. Marine Corps.

To qualify for a scholarship, potential recipients shall be undergraduate, full-time students at the University of Alabama who graduated from high school in one of the following counties in Alabama: Tuscaloosa, Hale, Marengo, Perry, Sumter, Greene, Pickens, Fayette, Lamar, Marion, and Walker and who meet one of the following criteria: (a) are Marines with an honorable discharge; or (b) are Marines currently serving in the United States Marine Corps Reserve; or (c) are United States Navy Corpsmen with an honorable discharge who have served with any Marine Corps unit in the Fleet Marine Force; or (d) are children, grandchildren, or un-remarried spouses of individuals, living or deceased, who meet criterion (a), (b), and (c); or (e) are accepted for or currently enrolled in the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Course; or (f) are graduates of a United States Marine Corps Junior ROTC Program located in those same counties.

The endowment is entirely administered by The University of Alabama.  All scholarship applicants and recipients must comply with applicable University of Alabama policies and procedures in applying for and receiving scholarship assistance from the endowment.

Currently the endowment is being funded by the Alabama Marines Foundation, however, others (individuals, businesses or other tax-exempt organizations) wishing to contribute to the scholarship are encouraged to do so at any time.  By contributing you will help to enlarge the endowment and thereby provide additional financial support to Marine and Navy Corpsmen veterans and their families who have honorably served their country.  Donations to the endowment are fully tax-deductible and may be made in any amount.
