Local Students Learn Leadership Through Marine Corps Values

Inspiring the Next Generation to Lead with Honor and Purpose
At a time when leadership and character are more important than ever, the Alabama Marines Foundation is proud to support programs that instill these values in young men and women across the state. This spring, more than 60 students from high schools in Tuscaloosa, Marion, and Walker counties participated in a weekend leadership camp inspired by the core principles of the United States Marine Corps.
Hosted in partnership with local Junior ROTC units and civic educators, the program focused on building confidence, discipline, and a sense of service among participants. Activities included physical team challenges, ethics workshops, and guided mentorship sessions with Marine Corps veterans who shared personal stories of courage and commitment.
“Our goal is to pass on more than just military knowledge—we want to shape character,” said Sgt. Major (Ret.) Anthony Williams, a Foundation volunteer who led a leadership discussion during the camp. “These students showed initiative, teamwork, and maturity beyond their years. It was an honor to work with them.”
The program, made possible through a grant from the Alabama Marines Foundation, is just one of several initiatives focused on youth development and civic education. By reinforcing values such as honor, courage, and commitment, the Foundation aims to inspire a generation of leaders who understand what it means to serve something greater than themselves.
Participants left the weekend with more than just new skills—they left with a deeper understanding of the importance of integrity, respect, and responsibility in leadership.
“These are values that will carry them through life, no matter their career path,” said Foundation board member Mary Ellis Carter. “Whether they choose to pursue military service or not, they’re better prepared to lead in their schools, communities, and future careers.”
